How the ratio is built into the gun
The ratio comes from the geometry of the trigger, its pivot, and the drive that grips the rod. Move the pivot or change the drive and the gun multiplies your squeeze by a different amount. That is why two guns that look alike can feel completely different. We have built caulk guns since 1974 and make them from 3:1 to 26:1, and our dual-thrust models switch between two ratios on the same frame.
The trade-off: force against flow
Higher thrust is not free. The more the gun multiplies your force, the less material it moves per trigger pull. Think of the gears on a bicycle. A low gear is easy to pedal but covers less ground per turn. A 26:1 gun pushes epoxy without strain, but you pull the trigger more often to lay the same length of bead. A 6:1 gun lays a long bead of acrylic quickly, and struggles with a thick urethane, especially on a cold morning.
So the right ratio is not the highest one. It is the lowest one that moves your material comfortably. That keeps the bead continuous and your hand fresh.

Temperature and job size
Cold thickens sealant. A tube that flows freely in a warm shop can feel like a different product on a job site in November. If you work outdoors in cool weather, choose the higher end of the band for your material, or a dual-thrust gun so you can switch when the tube gets stiff.
Job size matters too. For a weekend repair a moderate ratio is fine. For a crew laying hundreds of feet a day, the higher ratio pays for itself in fatigue and consistency, and a rotating barrel like the 250 keeps the bead angle right around corners without twisting your wrist.
Three jobs, three ratios
Re-caulking a bathtub. Kitchen and bath silicone is thin. A 10:1 gun such as the 930-GTD lays a long, even bead and stops when you release the trigger, which matters on a joint everyone will see.
Sealing concrete expansion joints. Polyurethane fights back, and it gets worse in the cold. Step up to 18:1 with the 250 or the 29 oz 255. The revolving barrel lets you follow the joint without twisting your wrist.
Structural epoxy. Two-part epoxy is as thick as cartridge material gets. A 26:1 gun such as the 375-XSP moves it steadily, and for all-day epoxy work a pneumatic applicator does the pushing for you.
Dual thrust: two ratios, one gun
Dual-thrust guns give you a 12:1 setting for speed with standard sealants and a 26:1 setting for thick or cold material, on the same frame. The 360-DT takes 10 oz cartridges, the 365-DT takes 29 oz cartridges, and the 720AL-DT takes 20 oz sausage packs. If you only want to carry one gun, this is the one.
Beyond thrust ratio

Drip-free or ratchet. A drip-free gun releases rod pressure when you let go of the trigger, so the bead stops when you stop. A ratchet gun keeps pushing until you flip the rod. Our comparison of drip-free, thumb-release and ratchet guns covers the difference in detail.

Cartridge size. Match the gun to the package: 10 oz cartridges, 29 oz quarts, 20 oz sausages, or bulk. Thrust ratio applies to all of them.

Weight and balance. A lighter gun helps overhead. A heavier frame damps vibration on thick material. Hold both before you decide.
Build quality follows the ratio
A high-thrust gun carries more load through its frame, rod and drive, so it is built heavier: thicker frames, stronger rods, heavier springs. That is part of why a 26:1 gun costs more than a 6:1 gun, and why it outlasts one on thick material. Buy the ratio the job needs, not the biggest number on the shelf.
Keep the ratio working
A thrust ratio only delivers if the rod is clean. Wipe the rod after every job, keep dried sealant off the plunger cup, and put a drop of light oil on the rod where it passes through the drive. If the trigger starts slipping, the drive is worn or fouled. Clean it first. Replace it if cleaning does not fix it.
Questions we get asked
Is a higher thrust ratio always better? No. It moves less material per pull, so on thin caulk it slows you down for no benefit. Pick the lowest ratio that handles your material comfortably.
What ratio do I need for silicone? 10:1 to 12:1 covers kitchen and bath silicone and most general sealants. A 6:1 gun will do it, with more hand effort.
What ratio for polyurethane or construction adhesive? 18:1 or more. In cold weather, or with a fast-skinning urethane, 26:1.
Does thrust ratio change how much comes out? Yes. Higher ratio, shorter bead per pull. That is the trade for the extra force.
