Using a Cartridge Gun for Beginners

If you’re new to caulking, using a cartridge gun can feel intimidating—but with the right prep, tools, and technique, it’s one of the easiest ways to get professional-looking results. In this guide, we’ll walk through how to use a cartridge caulk gun step by step, from surface prep to a smooth finished bead.

Step 1: Remove Old Caulk

Before applying new caulk, it’s important to start with a clean surface.

Use a caulk removal tool to scrape away any old, cracked caulk. Place the blade at the base of the caulk and push forward steadily until it lifts away.

If the old caulk is stubborn, a caulk remover or debonding spray can help soften it, so it scrapes off more easily. Newborn’s Caulk Removal Kit includes everything you need to remove old caulk and adhesives efficiently.

Removing old material prevents new caulk from sitting on weak or failing surfaces, which can lead to premature cracking or peeling.

Step 2: Clean the Surface Thoroughly

Once the old caulk is gone, clean the area so the new caulk can properly adhere.

  • Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove residue
  • Clean again with warm water and diluted bleach to eliminate grime or mildew
  • Rinse with clean water and dry completely with a towel

Caulk traps whatever is underneath it—so any dirt, moisture, or residue left behind can cause failure down the line.

Step 3: Tape Off the Area

Apply painter’s tape above and below the joint you’ll be caulking. This protects surrounding surfaces and helps create a clean, straight caulk line—especially helpful for beginners.

Step 4: Prepare Your Newborn Cartridge Gun

If your gun has a thumb-release, press the release trigger on the back of the gun, hold the back handle, and pull the rod all the way back. This opens the frame so the cartridge can be inserted easily.

If your gun does not have a thumb release, simply pull the rod all the way back manually.

Newborn cartridge guns are designed for smooth rod movement and controlled trigger pressure, making them ideal for first-time users. Make sure you’re not squeezing the trigger – only hold the back handle so the rod can move freely.

Step 5: Choose the Right Caulk

Different surfaces require different materials. Octogun Universal Premium Silicone is designed to work across a wide range of common surfaces, making it a great option for beginners who want versatility and reliability.

Step 6: Cut the Caulk Nozzle

Cut the nozzle of your caulk tube at a 45-degree angle

  • For wider joints, cut closer to the base of the nozzle
  • For smaller cracks, start with a smaller opening near the tip

It’s always better to cut less at first—you can make the opening larger if needed. All Octogun caulk guns include a built-in spout/nozzle cutter for quick setup.

Step 7: Pierce the Seal

Most Newborn caulk guns include a built-in seal puncture tool. Use it to pierce the inner seal of the cartridge.
If your gun doesn’t have one, a nail or long pin works as well.

Step 8: Load the Cartridge

With the rod pulled back, place the cartridge into the gun:

  • The flat end goes against the push rod
  • The nozzle fits into the front of the frame

Lightly squeeze the trigger to ensure the cartridge is seated straight and secure.

Step 9: Practice First

Before applying caulk to your actual surface, practice on a piece of cardboard or scrap paper.

Hold the gun at a 45-degree angle and gently squeeze the trigger while moving the gun steadily. A smooth, consistent bead means you’ve found the right balance of pressure and speed.

Step 10: Apply the Caulk

Hold the caulk gun at a 45-degree angle to the joint.
Press the trigger steadily while moving the gun in one continuous motion along the crack.

Step 11: Smooth the Bead

Use a finishing tool or your finger to gently drag along the caulk line, smoothing and pressing the caulk into the joint.

For a more precise finish, the Newborn QuikSlix™ Finishing Tool is a great option—especially for clean, professional edges.

If you have an Octogun caulk gun, a finisher tool is attached to the gun that comes with 4 tooling sides: 5mm, 8mm, 90 degrees, and rounded.

Step 12: Remove Tape and Let It Cure

Carefully remove the painter’s tape before the caulk fully sets.

Allow the caulk to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions—most products need at least 24 hours before exposure to water or heavy use.

If you’re using Octogun Silicone, you’ll get strong adhesion, flexibility, and long-lasting performance across a wide range of surfaces.

Using a cartridge gun doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right prep and a reliable Newborn caulk gun, beginners can achieve clean, durable results on their very first project.
