How to Clean a Bulk Caulk Gun  

How to clean a bulk caulk gun is a common question for professionals and DIYers alike. Bulk caulk guns are built to handle tough materials and repeated use—but like any tool, they perform best when they’re properly cleaned. Regular maintenance prevents buildup, keeps material flowing smoothly, and extends the life of your gun.

1. Unscrew and Remove the Nozzle 

Start by unscrewing the nozzle from the gun. This gives you full access to any material left behind and makes cleaning much easier. 

Use a putty knife or scraper to remove any excess caulk from the nozzle and barrel. Clearing this buildup early helps prevent clogs and uneven flow during your next use.

2. Flush the Barrel 

Newborn bulk caulk guns feature airtight piston packings, be they leather or plastic, both of which are supplied with our bulk guns.  These piston packings minimize residue left behind in the barrel. However, with repeated use, material can still build up over time. 

• For solvent-based materials: 
  Many professionals clean the gun like a syringe by placing it in a solution of xylene or toluene, powerful solvents that break down stubborn residue. Pour about an inch of the liquid into the bottom of a bucket. Place your bulk gun into the liquid, fully submerging the opening, and then pull the plunger in and out to flush the barrel thoroughly.  Once thoroughly clean, follow up with flushing with warm water to remove as much solvent as possible. 

• For water-based materials: 
  Place the gun in a bucket of warm, soapy water with the cap removed as described above. Pump the plunger up and down to help dislodge any remaining caulk from inside the barrel. 

Tip: Always clean the gun as soon as possible after use—dried material is much harder to remove.

3. Dry and Lubricate Moving Parts 

Once the gun is clean and dry, apply a light lubricant (such as WD-40) or standard machine oil to the moving parts. This reduces friction and ensures smooth operation the next time you use the gun. 

Avoid over-lubricating—just a light coat is enough.

4. Final Check Before Storage 

Before storing your gun, make sure: 

• The barrel is clear of residue 

• The nozzle is clean 

• The plunger moves smoothly
