How to Caulk a Bathtub: A Step-by-Step Guide for a Clean, Waterproof Seal

A properly caulked bathtub keeps water where it belongs and prevents mold, mildew, and costly damage behind your walls. Whether you’re updating old, cracked caulk or sealing a brand-new tub, using the right tools makes all the difference.

Hereโ€™s a simple step-by-step guide to help you get a clean, professional finish.

What Youโ€™ll Need

  • Paper towels or clean rags
  • Painterโ€™s tape (optional)

Step 1: Remove the Old Caulk

Before applying new silicone, the old caulk must be completely removed.

Use the Octogun Removal Kit to:

  1. Use the non-corrosive debonding spray to soften the caulk.
  2. Score along both edges of the existing bead using the bladed removal tool.
  3. Lift and pull away the old caulk.
  4. Scrape off any remaining residue.

Leftover caulk can prevent proper adhesion, so take your time here. Once removed, wipe the area clean and allow it to fully dry.

Step 2: Prep the Area

Make sure the surface is:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Free of soap scum or debris

For extra clean lines, apply painterโ€™s tape along both sides of the joint where the tub meets the tile or wall.

Step 3: Load Your Caulk Gun

  1. Cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle.
  2. Start with a small opening โ€” you can always cut more if needed.
  3. Puncture the inner seal if required, or use a box cutter to cut off the nub
  4. Load your Octogun Silicone into the Octogun 208D.

The 208Dโ€™s drip-free feature make it easy to control your bead with no mess.

Step 4: Apply the Silicone

Hold the gun at a 45-degree angle and apply steady, even pressure as you move along the seam.

Pro tip:
Move at a consistent pace to avoid gaps or excess buildup. A smooth, continuous bead is key to a watertight seal.

Step 5: Smooth the Bead

Use the attached finishing tool on the Octogun 208D to finish the bead immediately after application.

This helps:

  • Ensure proper adhesion
  • Create a clean, professional look
  • Push silicone fully into the joint

If you use painterโ€™s tape, remove it right away before the silicone begins to skin over.

Step 6: Let It Cure

Allow the silicone to cure fully before exposing it to water. Always follow the recommended cure time listed on the caulk tube. For Octogun Silicone, we recommend 24 hours.

If using Octogun Silicone, youโ€™ll have a flexible, 100% waterproof seal that is mold and mildew free โ€” perfect for high-moisture bathroom environments.
